The celebration took place under the patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Burundi, accompanied by the First Lady.
The ceremonies were also attended by several government authorities and executives, diplomatic and consular representatives, representatives of both national and international organizations, representatives of civil society associations fighting for women's rights, etc. The festivities kicked off with a parade through the Gitega provincial stadium. In her address, Mrs Immelde Sabushimike, Minister in charge of gender, reminded everyone the origins and significance of this day dedicated to women. She expressed her gratitude for the policies, texts, laws and programs already adopted by Burundi, although more resources are needed for their implementation. It was also an opportunity to make a vibrant appeal to everyone, and in particular to men, for a positive behavioral change so that Burundian society can free itself from the traditional and cultural beliefs that keep women in an inferior position.
Speaking on behalf of the United Nations System in Burundi, Mathieu Ciowela said that guaranteeing the rights of women and girls in all aspects of life is the only way to build fair and prosperous economies and preserve a healthy planet for future generations.
The day's address was delivered by the President of the Republic of Burundi, HE Evariste Ndayishimiye. The President of the Republic congratulated Burundian women on their invaluable contribution to the country's development. He mentioned that women play a major role in everyday life for the well-being of families, and urged them to continue to play their full part in the country's development. HE Evariste Ndayishimiye also recognized that women are the pillars of development, which calls for a firm commitment on the part of everyone to support women so that they dare to take the lead and believe in their potential.
